Not can’t. Won’t. The entire electrical wiring and mechanical system inside the new door is different from the old door. All the innards would need to be swapped. Honda informed me due to corporate policy on “safety and security,” they won’t do this swap. Not can’t, as it is possible, but won’t. They even acknowledge it would pass inspection if done, and maybe I can get a private mechanic to do it, but...

Well that’s no bueno. I can understand their overall policy, but this hardly seems like it’d leave the car less safe or secure.

Ask the dealership for the zone rep’s number, and plead your case. The mere action of asking might solve the problem.
And you sound very Strunk & White to me, which works. Red, white, and blue. And don’t get me started on comma-splice errors ...

It’s currently both less safe AND less secure, and because the other door is smashed, it has less structural integrity than the door that’s been put on in its place, but yeah, I literally told them price was no object (not often something they hear on a 17 year old car), but it swayed them not a bit.

You realise birds did this right? (Abunai means dangerous in Japanese). This is very triggering. *sobs*

On a more positive note, I also just bought a JDM Honda from Flavien!

Yes, but if you start asking why in Japan you will fall down a very deep hole. I lived there a long time, my wife is from there. Your car is unsafe, please recycle it!

Tell me more, tell me more. Also pictures. Also I’ve asked Flavien to help me out, but since I don’t currently possess a valid parking space, I’m probably screwed on getting anything else. :|
And I commute to work every day, so...

This is the kind of thing that any decent mechanic could fix in about an hour. Time for a second opinion.

I’ve lived here my entire adult life. I’m trapped by bureaucracy. No valid parking spot. If I give up my car willingly or otherwise, I literally cannot have another. Period. And I drive everyday to work. So... Yeah... I either fix it, or I walk 45 minutes from my suburban station to my workplace. In the winter. Biking is possible, but still terrible. So I’ll try to fix it first.

Yeah, that’s just silly then. I had the driver door on my car replaced several years ago after someone backed into it, luckily the bodyshop took care of everything. Good luck on getting yours fixed.

So far I’ve been trying to get ahold of the mechanic that did my last inspection, he’s not answering. I’ve contacted another mechanic, but I’m still waiting to hear back.

Plenty of private mechanics around, that shouldn’t be too bad. But I feel you, sometimes the frustration there!! I usually just go to a sumo basho and then stuff myself with chanko and beer, works for me. I’m sort of friends with John Gunning who does the NHK sumo broadcast stuff. I don’t think you live near my parents in law or their neighbor could do it, he seems to be pulling cars apart a lot. I just scrolled through your posts, I have seen some here and there. I see your new interior, I like it.

Thanks. Honestly, I have no interest in getting a new car. Mechanically, this one is largely sound. It drives just fine, and it passed shaken in September of 2016. But the exterior is super rough.

Dude, if you can’t find someone locally that’ll take the job (and I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able too, either), my guy up here in southern Tohoku should be able to take care of things as well.
He does bodywork too, if you feel like taking care of that as well.
Ganbatte. I hope you can get this taken care of before winter.

As I told Flavien, I will totally road trip halfway across Japan for someone who will just spend the time with me and GET IT DONE. I pulled out about 500,000 yen from my savings because of this and some other things, and I am willing to throw money at someone who doesn’t ask “why” or try to talk me out of it. I just want it done.

Google tells me 3 hours from Saitama Shi if you take the Tohoku Expressway.

Well mine finally responded. He’s overseas. That explains it. I also started another conversation for the body work/paint issues with a shop in Kanagawa. We’ll see what happens.

I know a few people have said it, but I’ll reiterate.
Take it to a body shop (collision repair). Here in the States, at least, it’s rather common to get a used door with different wiring/options, requiring you to completely disassemble the used door, then do the same to the damaged door to transfer all the components over to the undamaged replacement.

Can you not swap the door guts yourself? I know you were having some issues working on your car due to having no place to legally park and getting the hairy eye from passersby.
Take our old door to your apt and dissemble it at your leisure then you’ll know what to do with the other door. Since you know how to take the door off and put the other on you could temporarily slap the old one back on and retreat back to your apt to swap the guts.

I do like a good EK9.
I know you are limited by space and time, but swapping the wiring within the door is a pretty simple job. Were I closer I’d have been more than happy to lend a hand.
